postmaster が -i 付きで起動されていないという、この ML の参加者に
とっては昔からくさるほど見せられているやつですね。

$DAEMON というのは pg_ctl の事だと思うのですが、man pg_ctl すると

       -o "options"
              Specifies options to be passed directly to postmaster.
              The parameters are usually surrounded by single- or
              double  quotes  to  ensure  that  they  are  passed
              through as a group.

というのがありますよ？ これじゃないですか？
pg_ctl に対するオプションと postmaster に対するオプションに同じものが
必ずしも指定できるわけではないでしょう。
