debugオプションをつけてinitdbを実行したところ
以下のようなエラーが出ました。

FATAL 1:  database was initialized with MULTIBYTE encoding 1,
        but the backend was compiled without multibyte support.
        looks like you need to initdb or recompile.
DEBUG:  shutting down
DEBUG:  database system is shut down

configureを行う時に--enable-multibyte=EUC_JP --with-java
をつけているのがまずいのでしょうか？
