PostgreSQL8.0.1のインストールは以下のように行いました。

１．PostgreSQL7.4.6のエンジンを停止
２．PostgreSQL7.4.6の環境をディレクトリごと削除
３．PostgreSQL8.0.1のインストールを実行

　　Postgresqlのtarファイル解凍後、
　　/usr/local/src/postgresql-8.0.0配下
　　全て所有者をpostgresに変更。
　　ユーザーpostgresの環境変数を整え、
　　以下の作業をユーザーpostgresで実行しました。

  $ cd /usr/local/src/postgresql-8.0.1
  $ ./configure --with-perl --with-python --with-tcl
                -without-tk --with-java
  $ cd /usr/local/src/postgresql-8.0.1
  $ gmake
  $ gmake check
  $ su -c "gmake install"
  $ initdb --no-locale --encoding=EUC_JP

rootにてエンジン起動

  $ createdb XXX
