googleで検索したら、見つけたのですが、
下記の症状と似ているように思えますが、いかがでしょうか？

上記は、pg_resetxlog を使用するようです。

しかし、
> PostgreSQL(libpq) Version  7.2.1  

pg_resetxlog は、 7.2.1 では、 contrib の扱いになっているようです。
ソースから、コンパイルする必要があるかもしれません。

ちなみに、pg_resetxlog は、 7.3 から、メインソースに組み込まれたそうです。
